What a fire watch guard does
On an impairment watch the guard walks a set route at a set interval, checks each area for signs of fire and for conditions that could start one, and writes every round into a log. On a hot-work watch the guard stays with the work, watches where the sparks land, keeps extinguishing equipment within reach and remains on post after the work stops.

When a fire watch is required
Two situations call for a fire watch. The first is an impairment: a required sprinkler, fire alarm or other fire protection system is out of service. The second is hot work, where welding, cutting or brazing is done near material that can burn. The code sections behind both are set out further down this page.

The fire watch log
Every round goes into the log. It records the round times, the areas checked, the conditions found, the equipment checked and the officer's signature, and it is available to the fire marshal on request. You also receive our written daily report, so the record of the watch is in your hands as well as on site.

What the code says
- OSHA 29 CFR 1910.252(a)(2)(iii)
- During welding, cutting or brazing, fire watchers are required where combustible material is closer than 35 feet to the work, where combustibles further away are easily ignited by sparks, or where wall or floor openings expose combustibles. The watch is kept up for at least 30 minutes after the work ends, with extinguishing equipment at hand.

- The 2019 edition of the hot-work standard sets the fire watch at no less than one hour after hot work is completed, plus any further monitoring the permit authorizing individual requires. Where this differs from OSHA, your permit and the authority having jurisdiction decide the window.
