What does a security guard do at a school?

The front door

Private, charter and church schools decide for themselves how the door is covered, and many decide on a licensed officer. The officer’s post during the day is the one entrance the school keeps open: visitors are checked against the school’s procedure and signed in, contractors and deliveries are logged and directed, side doors are kept closed, and the officer walks the perimeter and the parking areas between arrivals. The curb

Drop-off and dismissal are the busiest and most visible half-hours of the day. The officer is at the curb: keeping the lane moving, watching for anyone on foot approaching the building, knowing the school’s pick-up procedure and stepping in when a parent does not, and being the adult in uniform that parents see. The school’s own staff run the procedure; the officer is there for the moments it needs backing.

The rest of the day and the calendar

Quiet hours are for the perimeter, the lots and the doors. A lockdown or a medical emergency follows the school’s emergency plan, which is written into the post orders, and the officer’s role in it is agreed in advance. Games, performances, fundraisers and graduations bring crowds and cash to a campus built for students, and they are staffed as event posts planned with the athletic director or the event lead.

Training and background
