What is a security guardhouse?

What happens inside

The guardhouse is where the property’s access rules are applied. The officer recognizes residents or checks their credentials, verifies a visitor against the resident’s authorization or the visitor list, checks a driver’s paperwork against the appointment, signs in contractors and deliveries, opens the barrier and closes it behind each vehicle, and logs every movement with a time. The entrance cameras are usually monitored from the same desk, and the phone or the radio to the office or dispatch is there too.

Who has one

Gated residential communities and master-planned neighborhoods with a resident lane and a visitor lane. Truck yards, terminals, plants and industrial parks where drivers and contractors are checked in. Some construction sites during phases with heavy deliveries. Corporate campuses and data centers. Parking structures at hospitals and offices. The guardhouse can be a purpose-built booth, a trailer or a room off the lobby; what matters is the post, not the building.

Staffing it

A guardhouse post is a fixed post: the officer does not leave it to patrol, or the gate is uncovered. Where the property also needs rounds, a second post covers them, or the guardhouse is staffed for the busy hours and the gate is closed and checked on patrol rounds after. Post orders record the access rules in full, the hours, the equipment in the booth and the escalation contacts, and the log is part of the daily report.

Hardware and the person

Card readers, keypads, license plate cameras and call boxes handle volume and records; the officer handles judgment: the card that belongs to someone who moved out, the visitor whose story does not match, the truck that is empty on the way in and full on the way out.
