What short notice means in practice

The call comes when the system fails: a panel at seven in the evening, a riser on a Saturday, a fire marshal’s instruction after an inspection. Dispatch takes the address, the system that is down, the floors or areas affected, what the fire department or the fire marshal has said and the impairment coordinator’s number, assigns officers and has a supervisor draft the post orders while they drive. The officers arrive with the log, the route and the alarm method, walk the affected areas with the coordinator or the staff member who has been covering, and take over with the time written down.

What dispatch needs from you

The address and the type of building, and whether it is occupied. Which system is out, since when, and what the authority has said. The areas affected and where officers can stage. The round interval, if one has been set, and how the alarm is to be raised while the system is down. The coordinator’s name and number and the contractor’s estimate for restoration. With those, the watch starts; the rest is refined on site.

Hot work on short notice

A contractor whose roofer arrives tomorrow, or whose welding crew has a permit that requires a watch the site cannot staff, calls the same number. The officer arrives before the torch is lit, stays where the sparks go, keeps the post-work period and signs the log for the permit file.
