Where armed officers fit in healthcare

Emergency departments with a history of violence against staff, behavioral health facilities, pharmacies with controlled substances, facilities that have received a specific threat and systems whose policy or insurer requires armed presence at certain entrances. The old site’s own wording is the one we still use: armed officers for facilities that need them urgently, with the customer-service training a hospital expects. The armed officer’s job in a healthcare setting is presence, de-escalation and the response the firearm exists for, and nothing else changes about the post.

What our armed officers bring

A Level III commission from the Texas Department of Public Safety, which requires the 45-hour course, firearms proficiency and a background check; company training in customer service, de-escalation, first aid, fire safety and incident reporting; and post orders written with the facility’s security director or administrator that say where the officer stands during triage, how the officer works with the charge nurse, what the officer may record and when police are called. Performance is reviewed daily against the report.

Where unarmed is still the answer

Clinics, urgent care, dialysis centers, dental and medical office buildings, plasma centers and most outpatient settings run unarmed posts: an officer at the entrance and reception, lot coverage at opening and closing, escorts after dark. Many hospitals run both, with an armed officer at the emergency department and unarmed officers in the garage and the medical office building.

Starting a healthcare post

Dispatch takes the facility type, the hours, the entrances and whether armed coverage is being considered, and a supervisor walks the facility with the person responsible for safety. Unarmed coverage can typically start within hours; armed coverage on short notice is available for emergencies. The healthcare hub lists each facility type with its own page.

Privacy and patient care

Armed or not, an officer on a healthcare post records events, not clinical detail, follows the facility’s rules on where the officer may be and defers to clinical staff on patient care. The post orders spell this out so risk management and nursing leadership know what the report will and will not contain.
