Shift handover: Definition and What It Means for Your Property

The weakest minute of a 24-hour post

A round-the-clock post is only as good as its handovers. If the day officer leaves at 6:00 and the night officer arrives at 6:10, the property had no coverage for ten minutes, twice a day, every day, and anyone watching learns it quickly. If the day officer leaves without mentioning the contractor still on the roof or the resident who threatened to come back, the night officer walks into the problem cold. What is handed over

The briefing covers open items: anything unresolved from the shift, people to watch for, contractors on site, doors or gates found unsecured, equipment faults, instructions received from the client during the shift. The log is signed over so the daily activity report runs continuously across shifts. Keys, access cards, the radio, the flashlight, the tablet and any client property at the post are counted and signed for. Where the post has a guard tour system, the incoming officer’s first scan is the last checkpoint of the handover.

A clean handover is what makes 24-hour coverage actually continuous, and the signed log is the evidence.
