Class B security contractor license: Definition and What It Means for Your Property

The company licence, not the officer licence

Texas licenses security at two levels. Individuals hold registrations and commissions: Level II, Level III, Level IV. Companies hold a contractor licence, and for guard companies that licence is Class B. What holding the licence obliges a company to do

The licence comes with duties that protect the client. The company must have a licensed manager who has passed the state’s examination, must run Department of Public Safety background checks on every officer before they work, must use approved training and keep training records, must carry the insurance the statute requires, must display the licence number on its vehicles and advertising, and must keep records the department can inspect. Violations can cost the company its licence, which is why the licence status is a meaningful signal about how a company is run, not a formality.

Ask for the number, then look it up on the Department of Public Safety’s public licence search. Confirm the company name matches the name on your proposal, the licence class is B, and the status is active. Repeat the check at renewal.
