Texas Private Security Bureau: Definition and What It Means for Your Property

One regulator for companies, officers and schools

Every private security company operating in Texas, every officer working for one and every school that trains them answers to the same regulator. Older contracts, badges and websites still say “Private Security Bureau” or “PSB”; the function now sits inside the Department of Public Safety’s Regulatory Services Division as the Private Security Program. The law it enforces is Occupations Code chapter 1702, which sets out who needs a licence, what training is required for each level, how background checks are done and what conduct can cost a company or an officer their licence.

What the regulator does for a client

For a property manager or contractor hiring security, the regulator’s most useful product is the public licence lookup. A company licence number, such as Price Protection’s B09430601, can be checked to confirm the licence is current, the company name matches and the licence class covers guard services. An individual officer’s registration or commission can be checked the same way. That check takes a minute and answers the question that matters most: is the company on my contract actually licensed to do this work, and are the people it sends registered to it.

Why the licence is more than a number

A licence carries obligations. The company must run DPS background checks on every officer, use approved training, keep records, carry the insurance the statute requires and report certain events. An officer must complete continuing education to renew. When a company loses its licence, its officers lose their registrations with it, which is why the lookup is worth repeating at each contract renewal.
