Personal protection officer (Level IV): Definition and What It Means for Your Property

Property protection and personal protection are different licences

Texas draws a line between guarding a place and guarding a person. A Level III commission covers the first: an armed officer at a gate, a lobby, a store or a site. A Level IV endorsement covers the second: an armed officer assigned to protect a named individual, moving with that person rather than staying at a post. The endorsement sits on top of a Level III commission; an officer cannot hold Level IV without first holding Level III, and the personal protection course is additional to the 45-hour Level III course.

Where Level IV comes up for a business client

Most of Price Protection’s work is property protection. Level IV becomes relevant in a handful of situations: an executive who has received a specific threat, a contentious termination or board meeting where a particular person needs to be accompanied, a visiting principal at a corporate event, a witness or a family in the middle of a dispute. In those cases the post orders describe a person and a schedule rather than a building and a route, and the officer’s job is to stay with the principal, manage arrivals and departures, and keep distance between the principal and anyone who should not be close.

Asking for the right thing

A client who asks for “an armed guard for the CEO” usually needs a Level IV officer, and a client who asks for “a bodyguard at the front door” usually needs a Level III post. Describing the situation to dispatch, rather than the licence, gets the right answer.
