What the contract defines

The posts: each one by location or route, the hours and days it runs, and whether it is armed or unarmed. The price: the hourly rate for each post, any minimum hours per shift or per call-out, and how an emergency start or a holiday is priced. The term: whether the agreement runs month to month or for a period, and the notice each side gives to change hours, add a post or end coverage. The company’s obligations: licensing, insurance, training, supervision, reporting and the daily report. The client’s obligations: access, a contact, payment terms. The post orders, attached and agreed.

What to read most carefully

The minimums, because they decide what a short shift or a cancelled event costs. The notice terms, because they decide how quickly coverage can change when a property’s needs change, and how quickly it can end. The named insured on the certificate, which should be the company on the contract and on the state license. Anything that promises a response time in minutes or a result, which a careful company will not promise.
